The 4P Standard: How to Read Certificates of Analysis and Select Safe CBD

A guide to product safety and verification. Understanding WADA regulations, the strict liability rule, and zero-THC purity standards.

Transparency Grounded in Science and WADA Frameworks

Interest in botanical recovery continues to expand worldwide. The World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) officially removed cannabidiol (CBD) from its Prohibited List, and major professional sports organizations (including MLB, NBA, and NFL) permit its use under strict guidelines.

However, athletes must keep one vital distinction in mind: CBD is explicitly exempted from WADA’s Prohibited List. THC remains restricted in-competition, subject to a urinary threshold of 150 ng/mL – a limit meant to catch active use, not trace exposure. Athletes have still been sanctioned well below the level of impairment, as Sha’Carri Richardson’s 2021 case showed, when a urinary THC metabolite above the decision limit disqualified her Olympic trials result despite the use being out-of-competition and unrelated to performance. So the safest standard for any competitor remains zero detectable THC.

The Hidden Risks of Uncertified Products

In competitive sports, the principle of Strict Liability applies: athletes are held 100% responsible for any substance found in their sample. Low-quality OTC products or unverified full-spectrum extracts often suffer from inaccurate labeling and may contain undisclosed trace THC.

Even minor THC exposure can trigger an adverse analytical finding – a career risk regardless of any performance effect, since detection alone triggers sanctions under strict liability.

The 4P Quality Benchmark

To ensure total safety and product integrity, reputable manufacturers adhere strictly to the 4P quality benchmark:

  • Purity: Products are crafted using pure CBD isolate (Zero-THC) or verified broad-spectrum formulas free from psychoactive contaminants.
  • Proof of Analysis: Every batch is backed by an accessible Certificate of Analysis (COA), verifiable via QR codes on packaging.
  • Professional Accreditation: Testing is performed by ISO-accredited independent laboratories.
  • Program Certification: Athletic lines carry trusted third-party credentials, such as NSF Certified for Sport or Informed Sport.

In verified laboratory reports, the THC row must explicitly display the mark “ND” (Not Detected). Adhering to these standards ensures complete transparency and safe integration of CBD into active lifestyles.
